How Come You Can’t Hear God Talk To You?
By Adam Bartlett

Have you ever heard the expression regarding a work of art for example, “That speaks to me.” What do you think they meant by that?

Do you believe that the Bible can speak to you the same way?

There were times in the Bible that God did audibly speak to people. Most of those times He sent an angel to relay the message for Him. When you consider all the people from the beginning of time till now, there have been very few that have actually heard messages from God. God did leave us something very important that would allow us to communicate with Him, the Bible. We speak to God in our prayers and God speaks to us through His written word to us. This is why the Bible is so important to us as believers.

What the Bible says:

Romans 10
17: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Galatians 3
2: This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

John 10
27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

John 16
13: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

John 18
37: Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.

God gives each believer a gift at the time they are born-again that also gives them the ability to hear Him, although not always audibly. That gift is the Holy Spirit and the Spirit reveals things to your heart and conscience from God.

Have you ever done something wrong and you felt guilty and knew it was wrong?

Where do you think that came from? It was God’s Spirit revealing it to you in your heart and conscience. This is one of the ways God communicates with us. The main way of communication is through the Word to us. The Word is what builds our faith and encourages us to believe what God says to us.

This is one of the reasons Jesus said, “we must come as little children to enter the kingdom of heaven.” We have to have that type of faith and as adults it is hard to have childlike faith because of our intellect. Unfortunately with knowledge comes a lot of times a built in blinder to faith. We allow the intellect to override simple faith in what we don’t know or see, or in this case hear.

God does speak to us in various ways and we fail to recognize it. It may never be an audible voice we hear but we miss out on many ways of communication with our creator because of our lack of faith. That is why we need the Word so much, it is our faith builder and what ignites that flame that will open the airwaves to our communication with Him. A lot of times we know what we need to do and then we find it in the Word and it reaffirms what we knew; that is God using His Word to speak to us through confirmation. God may also use someone else to confirm something you have been asking in your heart. A total stranger or someone you may know will come up to you and say something which is an answer you were looking for.

God works in many ways to communicate with us and we just need to make ourselves more aware of the many avenues He may choose to use.
