What does God look like?
By Adam Bartlett

How would you describe the air that you breathe or the wind?

God is much the same way as the air we breathe, He is there and we know it by the evidence but we do not see Him. Just as the wind, we can see when it moves something but we really never see the wind itself, the same is true of God. We see the attributes of God in others and nature itself.

If someone were to ask you “Who” you are? You would probably give a variety of answers but most of them will probably be a description of what you do and not “Who” you are. We are not what we do but what is inside us. Each person is unique and has different characteristics which make us who we are. God’s characteristics also make up who He is and what He looks like.

What the Bible says:

John 4
24: God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

John 14
9: Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

Isaiah 6
1: In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
2: Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
3: And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
4: And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
5: Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
6: Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

Daniel 7
9: I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
10: A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

Revelation 1
13: And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
14: His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
15: And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
16: And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
17: And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

We will never have an accurate description of what God really looks like until we get to heaven and see Him ourselves. Jesus tried to convey to His disciples that all of the characteristics they were seeing in Him were a direct resemblance of God. Isaiah, Daniel, and John had visions, or were allowed to see what they seen in the Spiritual realm. We also have to understand that what they relayed that they had seen were only the best descriptions they could give in human terms. Everything we know and have heard as to what God looks like can only be at best a pale comparison to reality.

There are many that have had near death experiences and describe God as an immense light that cannot be looked at. A warm flowing light that is indescribable and brighter than any light we can ever imagine. He has been explained as a massive energy force and many other things. I know that the Bible says that God is love and therefore whatever is the purest essence of Love is God. We cannot put a form or picture to God because He is a spirit but we will know when we see Him.

I believe His attributes are very evident and we see His characteristics every day and that alone should give us at least a faint example.
