Lesson #6 The First Sin
We have seen five examples in the New Testament and now I would like to use a few in the Old Testament to show the same method used. It is a little different in the Old Testament sometimes in the sense that you may not necessarily ask what each item is or represents but rather what is a spiritual application of it. I pray that the following examples will help you to see how to make these applications in the Old Testament.
Genesis 3:1-13
1: Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Sin will approach you - you do not have to go looking for it
Sin will cause you to question the word of God
2: And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Sin will cause you to add to the word - see 2:17
Adding even one simple phrase can change what is said and it should never be done with the scriptures. The Jehovah's Witnesses are notorious for this, and it changes the whole meaning of a scripture.
4: And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
Sin will try to tell you truth is a lie
satan knew that the death God was speaking of was spiritual but he led them to believe it was physical. Either way the enemy will try to get you to question the Word of God and disbelieve.
5: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
The beginning of the New Age doctrine
6: And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
satan's temptations will cause you to see things in a new way - Eve had seen this tree before but satan caused her to see three things.
- - Appeal to the Natural (Body) - Good for food
- - Appeal to the Flesh (Soul) - Pleasant to look upon
- - Appeal to the Spirit - Desire to be wise
satan will tempt you completely - body - soul - and spirit
he will also use you to cause others to sin
satan is not satisfied with just causing you to stumble, if he can use you to cause someone else to sin he will. Your actions can cause others to either question or justify their actions. Our witness and the way we present ourselves to the world is very important.
7: And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
The spirit will convict you and make your condition known - satan will try to get you to think you should try to take care of your sin instead of confessing it
Fig Leaves - Man's attempt to cover their own sin by their work
Their "spiritual" eyes were opened, they had seen the fruit in the natural but now they could see the spiritual consequences of their actions. The apron of fig leaves is an example of how we often try to cover our own sins usually with excuses or transferring the blame to someone or something else.
8: And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
satan will try to get you to hide from God instead of seeking Him - John 3:19-21
The enemy does not want you to find forgiveness, he wants you to give up and believe his lie that you cannot be forgiven. He will try every way possible to cause you to fall away and believe that you are no good. His purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy you any way he can.
9: And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
God will always seek you - may send a messenger your way
10: And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
The devil will try to make you afraid of God by dwelling on your condition
The enemy wants you to think that you have too much sin or that your sin is too great to take to God. If he can keep you away from God or keep you from confessing your sins then he keeps you in his grip.
11: And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
God already knows but will prod you to confess
Our willingness to confess shows our submission to His power over us and our understanding that we need His power to forgive us.
12: And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13: And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
Introduction of the human nature and pride - not accepting responsibility - must find someone to blame
The enemy's best trick is to keep us from personal responsibility.
