Favoritism that Separates

Part 1

Genesis 37: 1-11

Vs. 2 - Joseph was only 17 when God revealed His great plans for him. God does not limit whom He chooses to work through based on age. Sometimes it is easy to push young people aside because we feel they have a lack of experience and wisdom. God can equip anyone He chooses and if He does choose to use a young person it is not for us to decide the level of wisdom they have. Many of the kings in the early days of Israel were very young and a few were under the age of 10 and yet were chosen to rule the kingdom. Joel 2: 28-29 also show us that God will not be selective in whom He chooses to pour His spirit upon. The fact that Joseph brought back "their evil report" indicates that there were things happening that was bad for the family name. It also shows the desire of Joseph for honesty and righteousness when he saw things that shouldn't be. See 1 Samuel 2:22-24 for an example of this.

Vs. 3 - Favoritism breeds jealousy, and most especially among siblings. God is not a respector of persons (Romans 2:11 & Ephesians 6:9) and we should not be either. God looks beyond the physical appearances and into the heart and knows the intents of the heart. Joseph was filled with a desire to serve God and be upright, his brothers however were not so and therefore it made them jealous of Joseph. How many times we allow that to happen in our lives and we don't see that we all have the same opportunity to develop that same relationship with God.

Vs. 4 - The fruit of favoritism is Jealousy.

Vs. 5-8 - Because of the jealousy as a result of the favoritism shown by Jacob, his brothers would listen to nothing he said. Even though it was a dream from God it cannot be received in a heart of hate and jealousy. We should take note of that in our Christian circles and churches today. John 15: 18-20

Even though they understood the meaning of God's message they could not receive it for the condition of their hearts. Proverbs 28:14

How many times are we guilty of the same condition when we hear a message by God yet fail to accept it and act on it because there is something in our lives that is keeping us from that blessing? What a shame to allow jealousy or some other thing in our hearts to rob us of a message from our Lord.

Vs. 9-11 - The second dream went a step further and involved his father and mother this time. Jacob rebuked him but also observed the dream. He did not dismiss it as the brothers did, possibly remembering back to how God had exalted him above Esau.

Make a move today to determine in your heart that you will not allow petty hindrances in your heart to keep you from the message of God and the blessings that accompany it.
