Giving It All
Genesis 22: 1-14
Vs. 1 - To clear up any misunderstanding God does not "tempt" any man (James 1:14) in the sense of luring them to make a wrong decision. The word encompasses many meanings which include, "to prove, determine, evaluate…" It is obvious through this usage that the intent here is to prove Abraham's faithfulness and obedience to become the progenitor of God's chosen people.
Vs. 2 - Moriah means "seen of God" and when you sacrifice everything to God He "sees" you. Moriah is the mount on which later the Temple would be built by Solomon. It is also believed that the very rock on which Abraham was preparing to make this sacrifice was the place that the Ark of the Covenant rested. It is also the place believed to be today that the Dome of the Mosque sits and Muslims believe that Muhammad ascended on his white horse into heaven. Some rabbi's go as far as to say that the very rock that Abraham was going to offer Isaac on was created first and the rest of the world was formed around it.
Vs. 5 - Abraham prophetically states that "they" will return. He was obviously speaking out of his faith that God would make the situation work (Hebrews 11:19).
Vs. 6 - Just as Jesus bore the wood for the sacrifice of Himself so Isaac was typified in the same manner here. This whole act illustrates the future atonement that would be offered by Christ. God was placing something in the history of the Jewish people that they could look back on and see His great provision to come.
Vs. 8 - One of the most pointed prophetic scriptures in the Bible, "…God will provide HIMSELF a sacrifice." It does not say that God will "provide FOR Himself" but pointedly and specifically states what was intended by God. God did provide Himself a sacrifice through Jesus, as 1 Timothy 3:16 testifies. John the Baptist also testified of this by declaring "Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world."
Vs. 9 - Just as Abraham, you must be able to lay everything on the altar of God, even the thing that is most important to you. God may not require it from you but He wants to know if you are willing to lay it down for Him. Not only to prove that we are willing to let it go but to prove that we trust it with Him and that He will not allow anything to happen that is outside His will.
Vs. 12 - God may not always require the sacrifice as was the case with Isaac. If that item however becomes more important to you than God, then it could be required. It may not necessarily be a person but a job, car, money, drugs or anything that could take control of you and be placed in between you and God.
Vs. 13 - Striking contrast here as to Jesus having the crown of thorns placed on His head. How that the Jewish people cannot see this story and connect the resemblance to the events of Jesus is a mystery.
Vs. 14 - The Lord will provide in all situations. He is never late, never early, but always right on time.
Have you given it all up for the Lord? Is there still something that you are hanging onto that is coming between you and God? Sacrifice it now by placing it on the altar and believing that God will take care of it and give you what is needed in it's place.
