Passover & Unleavened Bread

Exodus 12: 14-20

Vs. 14 - There was no end to the remembrance of these two feasts and they are still observed today by Jews. The statute by God was to remember this occasion forever throughout their generations.

The importance and reason for this is mentioned in vs.17. It was to be a reminder year after year of not only how God delivered them, but of what they were delivered from. Paul reminds us in this age to remember the same thing - Galatians 5: 1 & Ephesians 2; 1-7. It is always good to remember where we came from and what we were delivered from to keep from becoming prideful and thinking it was all our doing. When we look back and see what sinful conditions God graciously took from us it should do nothing less than leave us in awe of His greatness and Mercy towards us.

Vs. 15-19 - Stressed in these three verses to not eat leavened bread during this time. Not only to not eat it but not to allow it in the house. Leaven is represented in the Bible as a type of sin. Representing haughtiness and the pride of life that puffs us up. The Jewish people were expected to remove all traces of (sin) leaven for seven days, as they remembered their deliverance from bondage and sin.

What would happen if as Christians we took seven days out of the year to remove all traces of sin from our houses? Could we make it seven days without; television, video games, computer, phones and many other things? Not that any of these things are sinful in themselves, but they can easily become objects that come between us and our time with God.

Do any of the items listed above take more of your time than the amount of time you spend with God? This is how they can become obstacles and even sinful. If we spend more time with these objects than with God then they become little gods to us. My challenge to you is to test yourself and take one or more of the items listed and remove them from your life for seven days. Replace that time with time in prayer or the Word. We should always remember what we were delivered from and be careful not to allow those very things to again enslave us.
