Resolutions

With the start of a New Year there are always resolutions that are made with all intentions of accomplishing them. Many times we make spiritual goals only to get frustrated that it is so hard to reach them. Have you ever talked with someone that told you of something that they learned while in their 'quiet time' while the whole time you were silently hoping that they would not ask you about yours? I have, and there are many spiritual resolutions that I have watched slip away in frustration because I was unable to attain it. I don't know what your aspirations are for your spiritual life and I pray that you do have some. I don't know any of your spiritual secrets or commitments. I do know, that being a new year and knowing that we are rapidly approaching the end of this age, it is imperative that we find a way to become more disciplined and see our spiritual resolutions through. I have set some for myself and know that it will take the power of God to help me achieve them. If you feel like a failure because of all of the past goals you have set only to see them slip away, don't. Paul understood this battle better than anyone and puts it in these words;

Romans 7

21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

22 For in my inner being I delight in God's law;

23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

There is a battle going on that is as real as you and I and it is often put aside because it is unseen. There is a battle that rages in each of us and affects us in different ways and at different levels. We are all familiar with the verse that explains that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the principalities and powers in the heavenlies. The first step in making our spiritual goals a reality is to recognize and understand the battle we are facing. The only way for that to happen is to spend time in the Word and in Prayer. Unfortunately these are two of the areas that most make their resolutions in and see them falter each time. There is a reason for this and we should all be aware of it. The enemy, yes the devil, does not want you to succeed in those two areas. The Word is the Sword (our weapon) that will defeat the enemy and the Spirit is the power that swings it. Prayer is the key to unlocking that power and that is why the enemy fights against it so much. I challenge you to prove this concept wrong. Make a resolution to spend a certain amount of time in prayer, I mean uninterrupted prayer each day at a certain time and watch what happens. I pray that every Christian's goal each year is to spend more time in the Word and Prayer than the previous year. The Bible does tell us that "without holiness you cannot see God." The only way to obtain 'holiness' is to spend time in the Word and Prayer. Whatever your resolutions are for this year I pray that you incorporate these two main ingredients into them.

Jesus said that "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" this alone is enough to focus on for the next year. The Bible says in the book of James speaking about the words that come out of our mouths, "how can cursing and praises come out of the same mouth" I pray that each of us seek for a closer and deeper walk with God than we have ever had before. Pray for God to place a hunger in you that can not be satisfied and the discipline to feed it.
