Steps into Sin
Genesis 12: 4-8
Lot started out with Abraham, knew all the blessings, and was at Bethel with Abraham. Lot was brought up in the right way and knew what that way was by the example of Abraham.
13: 8-13
Instead of Lot declaring as Ruth did (Ruth 1:16-17) Lot chose to separate from the righteous path.
12: 10
He chose what was appealing to the eyes and where there appeared to be little work involved. Much like Christians today, looking for the easy way instead of spending time in study in the Word and time in prayer. Looking at the outward appearance instead of the spiritual and its benefits.
12: 13
Here starts the progressive steps into sin. He lodges "near" Sodom. The first step of the devil is to get you close to sin, to entice you and work on your weakness.
14: 12
Notice that now Lot dwells "IN" Sodom. This is the way satan works, he makes sin appeal to the sight, then causes you to get close, then before you know it you are in it. This is why it is important to stop this process before it gets started. That is why we are told to "take captive every thought and bring it into the obedience of Christ."
19: 1
Notice now Lot is sitting at the gate. According to tradition and scripture (Deut. 21:19-21 and others) those at the city gate were elders or leaders of that city. Do you see the rapid and progressive steps of sin? The first step started when he chose to leave the righteous man of God, Abraham, and then the choices from that point on became carnal. We must stay in the Word and prayer to prevent these schemes of the devil to work in our lives in this same manner.
19: 5-8
Sin causes you to rationalize and not have any sense of morality or correct judgment. Sin can cause you to do things you would normally never do. There is a vast difference between the choices made while with Abraham and now in this situation.
19: 12-14
Living in and entertaining sin will destroy your witness and credibility, even with your family. The world is watching you if you proclaim to be a Christian and they are waiting to see how you react and handle certain situations. You are their Bible and they are judging your belief on your actions. That is not right nor an excuse for them, but you need to know that they perceive it that way.
19: 20-23, 30
Lot was spared and told to go to a certain place and still could not obey. Lot show how sin can affect your life and the steps into it. Once satan gets his foot in the door it is very hard to get him out. This is why it is extremely important in our world today that Christians take more of an active role in admonishing our Brothers and Sisters in Christ if we see this transpiring in their lives. WE are directed to in the scriptures, to "bear one another's burdens" and that "those that are spiritual restore such a person."
