The Birthright

Genesis 25: 27-34

Vs. 31 - The Birthright - was important for many reasons but the two main reasons were:

    1. Until the priesthood was established in Aaron's day, the first born
    2. exercised the priestly rights and duties when they were handed down from

the father. It was a position of honor and was a great responsibility which

carried with it all of the burdens that accompanied that responsibility also.

It was also a position of recognition among the people, the younger sons

were not noticed as was the oldest.

    3. The oldest son was to receive the charge of all of the father's household

and livestock. Basically was stepping into the father's role. Jacob knew

this and sought the Birthright. Regardless of whether or not he deceived

Esau or not, Esau proved that the Birthright was not as important to him.

Vs. 32 - He sold his spiritual inheritance for a temporary physical need. Matthew 16: 26

What would you have done in Esau's position?

How many times do we sacrifice our spiritual growth by allowing things of the world to control our

minds and lives?

Vs. 34 - "Despised his Birthright" Hebrews 12: 16-17

This is how God views it! How do we put ourselves in the same position as Esau? What do we do today to "Despise" God's grace and mercy toward us? How is it that those that are calling themselves children of God are "despising" God by the very things they do?
