The Power of Words
Isn't it amazing how much damage can be done by just a spoken word, yet at the same time a world of good can come by the same method. We go all the way back to the beginning and see that it was a spoken Word by God that started existence as we know it. The Bible has a lot to say about how we use our speech everyday. It is also important to remember that for all those who have "put on Christ" should be especially aware of their speech. The Bible tells us that after we are 'Born-Again' that we become 'Ambassadors' for Christ; in other words we are representatives of Him in "word" and deed. Therefore we should honor God in our speech and our actions. Look at what the book of James says regarding the tongue;
James 1
26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.
James 3
1 Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. 3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
We need to be aware of how we talk when around others, especially those that are not Christians. If we join in with the dirty jokes, and foul language then we are causing shame to the name of Christ. As James so aptly puts it above, how can we say with our mouth that we belong to Christ and with the same mouth let garbage flow out? James also lets us know that we are not expected to be perfect, but as Christians we are held to a higher level of accountability with our speech. Let's look at some more scriptures on this topic.
Colossians 4
6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
Titus 2:7-8
7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness 8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
Ephesians 4
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
You can see by the scripture above that it is our "speech" that can 'grieve' the Holy Spirit of God. We do not think of this but as I mentioned earlier, we represent Christ if we are Born-Again and therefore when we speak as the world does then we grieve the Spirit. That is why James said "Brethren we should not do this" notice to whom he was speaking, it was fellow believers. Jesus had much to say on the subject also.
Matthew 12
34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."
Luke 6
22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 46 "Why do you call me, `Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?
Matthew 10
28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 32 "Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.
Matthew 7
13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. 15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21 "Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, `I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
Jesus obviously thought it was something to take very seriously and we should also. We should redeem our time around others to share the Gospel with them rather than joining them in their speech. Jesus told us that we would not be accepted of the world but rather that the world would hate us. He said that the world would love it's own. I am not out to make enemies by no means but I can not compromise my faith to be accepted by the world or what I think to be friends. Christ is the ONLY friend that sticks closer than a brother.
Ephesians 5
11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
Proverbs 23
9 Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words.
Philippians 4
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.
I pray every day for God to give me wisdom to say the right things and to be the most effective witness I can be for Him. Do I make mistakes? ABSOLUTELY! Do I continue in them? ABSOLUTELY NOT! We have been entrusted with a great and precious gift and a charge over that gift. We are to make disciples of the world, not to become as the world. Pray with me that we can, with the help of the Holy Spirit, control our tongues to glorify God and exhort our fellow believers. Pray also that with the help of the Holy Spirit that we can be the witnesses HE has called us to be in this most desperate time.
