Plain Talk for Teens

Lesson #17

Question: Do I have to stop cussing if I am a Christian?

Opening Discussion:

Q - If Jesus were on earth today as He was in the disciple's days and walked around with us do you think He would cuss?

Q - Why do you think people use cuss words? Are these good reasons?

Q - Would you consider cussing good or bad?

What the Bible says:

Matthew 12

34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.
35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.
36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.
37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

Luke 6

22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

Ephesians 4

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

Ephesians 5

11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

Philippians 4

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.

Colossians 4

6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Titus 2

7 In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness
8 and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Luke 6

46 "Why do you call me, `Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

Q - Would we say a lot of the things we do if Jesus were standing right next to us?

Actually if you have accepted Christ then Jesus is with you all the time anyway so this applies already. If we would just think of Jesus being there with us then a lot of the questionable things in our lives would be answered. Would you do it if Jesus were there?
