Plain Talk for Teens

Lesson #5

Question: How come you can't hear God talk to you?

Opening Discussion:

Q - Have you ever heard the expression regarding a work of art for example, "That speaks to me." What do you think they meant by that?

Q - Do you believe that the Bible can speak to you the same way?

There were times in the Bible that God did audibly speak to people. Most of those times He sent an angel to relay the message for Him. When you consider all the people from the beginning of time till now, there have been very few that have actually heard messages from God. God did leave us something very important that would allow us to communicate with Him, the Bible. We speak to God in our prayers and God speaks to us through His written word to us. This is why the Bible is so important to us as believers.

What the Bible says:

Romans 10: 17

17: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Galatians 3: 2

2: This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

John 10: 27

27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

John 16: 13

13: Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

John 18: 37

37: Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.

God gives each believer a gift at the time they are born-again that also gives them the ability to hear Him, although not always audibly. That gift is the Holy Spirit and the Spirit reveals things to your heart and conscience from God.

Q - Have you ever done something wrong and you felt guilty and knew it was wrong?

Where do you think that came from? It was God's Spirit revealing it to you in your heart and conscience. This is one of the ways God communicates with us. The main way of communication is through the Word to us. The Word is what builds our faith and encourages us to believe what God says to us.
